Schwinn introduced their new A C Performance Indoor Cycle bike at last months IHRSA convention.
The addition of Power - Watts measurement to an IC bike can best be described as Indoor Cycling 2.0â„¢, where we transition from Exercising (not measurable) to Training (fully measurable). If you have participants who have come to your class for years, without any real improvement, Indoor Cycling 2.0â„¢ may be the answer they are looking for.

The braking system with magnets is brilliant, it is very smooth and makes every bike identical.
The smart release is a good idea for beginner spinners but make the ride bumpy for advanced ones who like to stand up.
The biggest flaw, it is recreating a racing bike and for someone like me 6′ and taller, the lower back gets a lot of stress, as the handle bar height is limited and too close, your knees may bump into it.
Get ready for a big surprise! More than 25% of the AC Performance bikes at my club are down after less than 3 months. There is a terrible ‘hitch’ when the cranks are at 6 and 12 o’clock making standing and riding virtually impossible.

Do you think it has something to do with the clutch system they use that allows you to stop peddling?
Road an AC for the first time this weekend. The comment above about tall riders is partially true. The cool thing is that the stem length can finally be adjusted for a true bike fit and if you pull the stem back too far and then stand up without perfect form, you might hit your knees on the handlebars, but you’d do the same on a well fitted road or tri bike. The “hitch” described is not a hitch, it is because this bike is not a fixed gear bike, it is more realistic for a geared bike. It rides indoors essentially the same as putting your road bike on a trainer – hard to stand up on those as well if you expect there to be resistance under you. It means that every time you stand up you essentially will be doing freezes – much more difficult than on a traditional IC Pro or other fixed gear spinner, but much truer to outdoor riding. In short, if you teach on these bikes, instructors will have to get away from standing up in “2” and teach the way someone would actually ride a geared bike outdoors. It also makes clipless pedals and cleats that much more important.

I am involved in the indoor cycling industry occupationally(sp?)and have been involved with the AC program from its beginnings. I’ve consulted with Schwinn on the bike and wrote corrections for the initial issues founds on the first run units.The “hitch” is an active clutch, which can be adjusted to varying degrees of “load” in 10 seconds to the point where you have no slip, same as a fixed gear. Not enough load, it feels like a slip at 6 and 12 o’clock. Adjust the clutch and your hitch is gone with a 5-10 second adjustment. As with most “brand new” designs (not unlike the NXT released in 05′, there will be issues associated with first production run units. The AC Performance is certainly one of the most evolved bikesI’ve ever ridden or been involved with, but because our industry is plagued with IKEA end table bike builds( build em’ faster faster,faster with the typical amount of minimal or non existent test riding, aligning ,tensioning, lubing or double checking of anything critical)we will continue to get our bikes delivered with far less than optimal performance and the stereotypical judgement of something being seriously “wrong” with the bike.If this bike is built with care and in depth approach, its very hard to beat!If you have issues you cannot resolve, shoot me an email and a phone #, I’ll see what I can do………..

Jeff is right there is an adjustment (a hole in the wheel, accessible with a screwdriver), to diminish the smart release effect.
Nonetheless, the Schwinn AC bike has been designed for what I considered the BORING cycling training classes, but not for the FUN aerobic cycling classes.
The day cyclists will understand, people are looking for nothing else than an aerobic class on a machine which looks like a bike.
It is all about the music and fun!
