PRLog (Press Release) — Apr 08, 2009 — Cycling Fusion, a new indoor/outdoor cycling website, launched a fundraising campaign in March for cancer research group LiveStrong. The fundraiser is taking a group of common cyclists to Italy in early May where they will ride the first five stages of the Giro d”™Italia, just hours ahead of Lance Armstrong and the other professionals.
One of the riders scheduled to participate, Raquel Schmidt, was diagnosed with cancer shortly after agreeing to the event. Despite her intentions to persevere and ride anyway, scheduled surgeries for the disease will prevent her from joining the team. The unfortunate timing of her diagnosis and absence gives the Giretto cycling team a new reason to ride and work to fight cancer.
Boasting a positive attitude, Schmidt says she has already asked Gene Nacey, founder of Cycling Fusion and event sponsor Global Ride, to “save [her] a spot on next year”™s team,” and that she has “asked everyone who was planning to donate to me to donate to others on the Giretto team for this year at the website.”
These cyclists are being sponsored mile for mile by supporters, and all the money collected will be donated to cancer research through the LiveStrong Foundation.
Schmidt”™s absence also opens up one more slot for a rider to join the team. Information about rider requirements can be found on the website. The deadline to sign up is April 10, 2009.
