New Indoor Cycling Group IC7 Indoor Cycle

IHRSA is the big fitness equipment show held each year in the USA. Last year the show was in Las Vegas and I spent a bunch of time riding and comparing a number of new-for-2013 Indoor Cycles with power, including the Spinner® Blade Ion and Freemotion's belt driven Carbon Drive S11.9.

There's more cool stuff coming out this year. I'm excited to see the new power bike from ICG pictured above:

The IC7 Indoor Cycle and its Coach By Color® Power Program brings optimal performance and opportunity to group exercise, team coaching, personal training and even individual use. World-class technology and member-centric coaching will make your program more colorful, more powerful and definitely more original. That means better experiences and better results for your customers to keep them coming back.

Displaying colors connected to zones (Heart Rate or Power) isn't new – but having the console glow where everyone in class and you (the Instructor) can see what zone they're in is very interesting. Zone based colors brings accountability, without the judgement of actual wattage amounts that some riders and Instructors dislike in other group display systems. My hope is that there is a very quick and easy setup process to input the rider's personal zones or thresholds that are tied to the different color zones. If you're concerned that all those lights = frequent battery replacements, you needn't be. The IC7 includes it's own charging system. Oh, and they're promising power accuracy of +- 1% and similar consistency between bikes. I'll know much more by next Thursday.

You can download the IC7 brochure here.

A little bird told me that Keiser will be showing their new M3 power meter console that now features Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) While everyone else is using ANT+ to broadcast rider data, Keiser's engineers have leapfrogged to the new BLE which consumes less battery power and it will connect with your portable device without a ANT+ dongle.

This year the Senior Group Fitness Instructor Amy is joining me and together we're excited to see all of our IC friends that we typically only get to talk to on the phone or Skype 🙂

Please let us know if you're going to be there and feel free to text me to meetup 612-868-0064

Media Alert – Sally Edwards and Zoning Blink Heart Rate Monitor on QVC

This email I got from Sally Edwards is exciting!Zoning Heart rate monitor on QVC

We were under attack … and we beat the kitty!

getting attacked

UPDATE: 1/29 8:49 CST – I've got my fingers crossed. Hopefully the preventative measures we've undertaken has this current attack thwarted and future attacks prevented!

Log-in access to ICI/PRO was locked down today, in response to a “Brute Force” attack 🙁

The unsuccessful attack had attempted to guess user names and passwords of members here. It looks like they tried over 6,000 times!

Please be assured that the attack was unsuccessful and was limited to just this website and NOT the secure shopping cart service to process financial transactions.

ICI/PRO is run on a very secure (and expensive) hosting platform, that features numerous security measures to protect everyone's accounts.

We'll continue to monitor the situation and respond as needed.

Thanks for your patience.

Minneapolis is America’s fittest city!

Star Tribune Photo

Star Tribune Photo

This doesn't mean I want to stay here… but Minneapolis was an awesome place to raise a family 🙂

From USA Today

Where in America should you go if you want to be “healthy, wealthy and wise”? TODAY's special series looks at top places in the US in each category – and you may be surprised at the winners.

Which city is considered the healthiest, fittest in America? It's not a sunny, bikini-weather spot like Miami Beach or Malibu. It's a city famous for its frequent sub-zero temperatures, where residents need snow coats and ear muffs for months of the year: Minneapolis, St. Paul, Minn., according to the American College of Sports Medicine's most recent American Fitness Index.

Minneapolis, St. Paul has more parks per square mile than any major city in the U.S. and is second only to Portland, Ore. for the number of bicyclists per capita. The Twin Cities also get high marks for access to fresh food.

“There are twice as many farmer's markets in that area than in the top 10 percent of [U.S.] cities,” says ACSM's Walter Thompson, Ph.D.

I don't agree with their judging criteria – access to or number of Farmer's Markets? Most are only open during our 4 or 5 weeks of summer and only on Sunday's.

Residents here are fit because we don't have a choice… it's all about survival during our Godforsaken winters. We're thin due to the amount of calories we expend keeping warm. Shoveling snow was the original full-body workout. Move fast enough between passes down & back up the driveway and you add a cardio component + you get the added bonus of staying warm and not freezing to death.

2013 Was Another Awesome Year @ ICI/PRO

awesome

Thank You! With the one exception (losing our friend Jim Karanas) 2013 was an awesome year here at ICI/PRO!

I just got back from co-teaching a 90 minute Performance Cycle class with the Senior Group Fitness Instructor Amy. We had a great group of committed Endurance Athletes this AM – I say committed because many of them said they went to bed early (missing the ball-drop), just so they would be rested for class this morning.

Here's the playlist we used – which is a combination of Amy's and my songs selections.

2014 New Years Class Spotify Playlist

While Amy was leading the ride, I got to thinking; as we move into 2014 it would be fun to take a quick look back at 2013, by looking at the numbers…

141,174 – Number of unique visitors to ICI/PRO – up ~20% from 2012.

418,367 – Number of pages they read while here.

20,518 – Number of views of our most popular page Starting an Indoor Cycling or Spinning® studio….can it work? If you have the of dream of starting a new Indoor Cycling Studio, you're not alone 🙂

1,458 – Total number of posts published here to date.

377 – Posts published in 2013

And to think, when I started this 5 1/2 years ago I was concerned we would run out of things to talk about!

Here's to making your 2014 the best year ever!

Big change to your “Super Secret iTunes RSS Feed”!

new and improved

Are you taking advantage of our Super Secret iTunes RSS Feed to listen to our Audio Class Profiles – through your computer or portable device [wlm_firstname]?

If so, we've made a significant change that will simplify finding just the right profile for your next class > now the Super Secret iTunes RSS Feed only contains profiles and PRO/Podcasts – not other free Podcast episodes.

Here's what happened .

Based on the sheer number of Podcasts and PROfiles we've published over the past 5 years, the iTunes RSS feed (that tells iTunes what's new here at ICI/PRO) has put on a bunch of weight. The sheer volume of content included in the feed was really slowing down our communication with the iTunes music store + many of our old episodes got pushed off the bottom of the list. As weight-loss is on the minds of many at the start of a new year – we felt this is a great time to shed a few pounds.

Now we are publishing two separate feeds:

  1. Our free iTunes RSS feed that's for everyone – .
  2. Our new Super Secret iTunes RSS Feed that's just for ICI/PRO members and only contains ICI/PRO member's only audio and video content.

If you're happy with things as they are, you don't need to make any changes.

But our suggestion is for ICI/PRO members to subscribe to both the free Podcast feed and the new Audio PROfiles RSS feeds.

Set up your Super Secret iTunes RSS Feed using iTunes on your computer

  1. You don't need to, but I would first open iTunes > select Podcasts and then delete the existing ICI/PRO Podcasts.
  2. to subscribe to the free Podcast.
  3. Scroll down this page and Right Click on the “RSS Link” below > Copy Link Address
  4. In iTunes – in the top left navigation select File > Subscribe to a Podcast > Right Click in the dialog box that will open and select > Paste (or us the keyboard Ctrl “V”) and then OK.
  5. Depending on your settings in iTunes you will probably see just the most recent episode. Use the old episode button to add more.

subscribe to a podcast

Super Secret iTunes RSS Feed on your mobile devise

Once you have a Podcast App installed on either an iDevice or Android, open this page on your device, Simply clicking the “RSS Feed” link below should open the App and asked if you want to subscribe to the Podcast > click OK and that's all you should need to do. Here's the link to the Apple Podcast App for iPhones and iPads – here's an App for your Android.

Please let me know if you have any difficulties.

ICI/PRO Members – the link to your RSS Feed is right below this. You'll also find it in the RH side bar of every post.
