Congratulations Sally Edwards – USA Triathlon Hall of Fame

Sally Edwards Triathlon Hall of Fame

Sally Edwards was the very first “Fitness Celebrity” I interviewed on the Indoor Cycle Instructor Podcast. Way back on September 29th of 2008, Sally and I recorded ICI Podcast #7 — Sally Edwards talks Heart Zones Training

Since then Sally has been incredibly helpful to me, both in my personal training and professionally as an Instructor. She's been an amazing resource, adviser and I'm very proud of the fact that she considers me her friend 🙂

When I saw that Sally was inducted into the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame, along with Mark Allen, Scott Tinley and other triathlon greats, I just had to tell everyone!

Her introduction at the awards banquet reads:

As an athlete, best-selling author and entrepreneur, Sally Edwards has constantly displayed the passion and the plan to get America fit. She has founded six fitness-related businesses, including Fleet Feet Sports, YubaShoe Sport Snowshoes and current ventures such as Upbeat Workouts, an iPhone app for runners. Edwards has written 23 books on sports, fitness and health, including the popular title, “Triathlons for Women.” As an athlete, Edwards is a 16-time Ironman finisher and set a Master’s world record in the event in 1988. She is a former winner of the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run and ran in the 1984 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. Edwards has served as the national spokeswoman for the Danskin and Trek Women’s Triathlon Series since 1990. She has a streak of 150 last-place finishes in the Danskin and Trek events so that no other woman has to finish last. Edwards was inducted into the Triathlete Hall of Fame in 1999.

You can watch Sally's acceptance here (scroll down to find it). True to form, when handed the microphone, Sally placed someone else in front of herself. She asked her friend and training partner Dr. Dan Rudd to speak briefly before giving her presentation. Inspirational in everything she does, you will enjoy Sally's talk about “Doing Your Best”.

The Black Hole for Runners – and Cyclists

The Black Hole for Runners – and Cyclists

My friend Sally Edwards makes an excellent point here that applies equally to any endurance athlete and affirms our discussion from Podcast 368 — Does Intensity Trump Duration?.

It turns out that very fast runs are good for you–and that moderately fast runs (those just above threshold, in the Black Hole) are not. That’s because Black Hole runs are too slow to cause enough stress to make your body want to strengthen itself, and too fast to allow you to go long enough to improve your endurance. Studies of top runners find that they (by design or not) minimize their time in the Black Hole.

How fast is the Black Hole? In terms of pace, heart rate, and the Heart Zones chart, the Black Hole is actually a very narrow band. It starts at threshold, right as you enter Zone 5, and goes about 5 percent higher. So, if your threshold heart rate is 150 bpm, your Black Hole would extend from 150 to 157 bpm. That means if you really want to improve, your fast runs should roughly start at a second threshold: 158 bpm.

**This post is one of several in an excerpt series from the book, Be a Better Runner by Sally Edwards & Carl Foster**

But don't discount fun exercise = running/cycling that you enjoy just for how it makes you feel. Many people have no interest in structured “training”, they exercise because they find it fun.

From Bicycling.com TRAININGFITNESS

Why There’s No Such Thing as Junk Miles

Whether you’re in training or not, every ride has a purpose–and just about every one is legit

Fun, however, is a legitimate purpose. Stress relief is a legitimate purpose. The fact that you can finally ride outside after being trapped inside by a wall of snow and ice for six weeks, structure be damned, is a legitimate purpose. The only non-legitimate purpose I can think of is if you’re out there joylessly slogging through some self imposed workout because you feel like you need more miles when those miles are not a) making you happy b) making you faster or c) building your reserves, but rather a) making you miserable, b) making you slower and c) breaking you down.

As an A type male, it was difficult to understand the whole “fun exercise” concept. What's the point of taking this class, if you're going to talk through it?

Once I understood that for some folks, Keeping It Fun is the objective, it became a lot easier to accept the appeal of SoulCycle type classes… and their wild success 🙂

ICI Podcast 17 Heart Zones USA Indoor Cycling Certification

This Podcast is was originally published in 2008, I have updated it with our new Podcast host information and I am representing it now. I hope you enjoy it, Joey

Dr. Alinda Perrine, O.D., M.P.H. and Red Jersey / Master Trainer with Heart Zones USA conducted the Level 1 & 2 Indoor Cycling certification programs I completed during the Active Healthy Living conference this past weekend. I felt the program was very well presented and would prepare a new instructor to teach a very effective class.

Alinda is a true cyclist. She and her husband operate Free Spirit Adventures in Caldwell, West Virginia and she recently completed a “Ride Across America” with another ride planned for next year.

What I liked best was the emphasis on Training (which is measurable) vs. Exercising (which tends to be just wasting your time).

The majority of the Indoor Cycling certification class revolved around Heart Rate training:

  • Instructing your participants on how to know if their body is prepared for exercise through a “Delta” test – Listen to the Podcast and see this link for more information.
  • Proper techniques for conducting sub maximal tests to determine Max or Threshold Heart Rates
  • Lots of discussion about Heart Rate specific class profiles.
