Am I alone in feeling there's some real magic in a well constructed Mashup? Next week I'll be publishing Waldo's Revenge – an Audio PROfile from Amy Pillitteri. Amy's profile was runner up in the Ultimate Instructor Class Profile contest. I really enjoyed her music playlist and it includes this Mashup Stayin' Hot (Nelly vs. Bee Gees) that isn't available on Spotify.
The magical part about a Mashup like this; I wouldn't ever consider using either song, in the original form, in my class… but blend them together and I joyfully hit the “Play” button. OK, it maybe that it's because it's a little naughty đ But the connection to the Bee Gees makes it alright, doesn't it?
Do you find yourself searching for songs to open your rides with- the perfect tunes to help your class ease into 80-90 rpmââŹâ˘s and a proper warm up? Here is a good one from a Juno Award winning Canadian singer-song writer. It is light hearted, clips along at 86 rpm and is conducive for introducing yourself, your ride profile and anything else on your mind that needs expressing before everyone gets heavy duty into the ride of the day. FeistââŹâ˘s songs have been used in commercials and movies, so her sound may be recognizable to you. Here is Feist and âI Feel It Allâ, from her 2007 album The Reminder.

The other day I ran into this song on YouTube: Love The Way You Lie – MASHUP from cover artist Sam Tsui and I thought it was a really great song for my spin class. I normally use it as my second to last song when we are doing a fast run to the end. Students seem to like it a lot as I see many mouthing the words while spinning.
This is a nice light tune that I can easily see brightening the day of my students… thanks for sending it Alan!

I've been doing a lot of “Shazam-ing” lately; in my car (safely), during a movie (now I don't have to wait for the credits) and just the other day at a friends office. I was walking down the hall and there was a very familiar tune playing over the Muzak system. Familiar… and yet not – something told me I knew the song, but I couldn't bring the name or artist into focus.
Does that ever happen to you?
Of course I'd left my iPhone in the car. I ran out and back just in time for Shazam to tell me who it was – Robyn doing a cover of Cobrastyle. I clicked the iTunes sample and as I listened to it, why I couldn't place it became obvious – I could understand the words đ
I've always enjoyed this 90 rpm tune and I have to admit I really liked the movie where I first heard it as well. OK – I'm a closet Jessica Simpson fan and she's got a line of fabulous shoes.
At times I'm greeted by some very foul music. Foul to the point where I find myself ejecting the CD from my car's stereo. Next I lightly “sand” the offensive CD against the garage floor (ensuring it becomes unusable) before returning the CD to it's jacket. Then I'll leave a little note, expressing my displeasure and disappointment over my daughter's choice of music đ
But this morning, as I drove to my 5:45 class, was very different! “I really like this… I wonder who it is?” Ejecting the CD provided no clue as there wasn't anything written on it. A quick text to daughter Carly returned; “IDK – marley left it Shazam it.”

Shazam is a free smart phone App (iPhone and Droids) that will listen to a song playing and tell you the name, artist and give you the option to purchase the song from iTunes. There's also a little play button that you can use to listen to the iTunes sample to confirm Shazam correctly identified the song – which by my estimation is always correct.
With your device connected to a wireless system go to the App store and download Shazam. It's free and the basic functionality is all most people will need; turn it on, hit the center button, Shazam listens and gives you the song info.
Spotify Premium subscribers, may want to upgrade to Encore for $3.99 a year.  Encore give you the option to Tag tracks you've identified and play them or create Artist Stations, using Spotify or Pandora on your device. I tried to purchase the upgrade. After correctly entering my Apple ID a half dozen times and reconfirming my payment details, everything failed… I didn't try again đ Â
As with many other Apps, they will try and take over your life… if you let them. When you first install the App you'll be asked to approve “Push Notifications” which allow Shazam to alert you to something they feel is really important. My personal choice is to turn these OFF.
