Am I alone in feeling there's some real magic in a well constructed Mashup? Next week I'll be publishing Waldo's Revenge – an Audio PROfile from Amy Pillitteri. Amy's profile was runner up in the Ultimate Instructor Class Profile contest. I really enjoyed her music playlist and it includes this Mashup Stayin' Hot (Nelly vs. Bee Gees) that isn't available on Spotify.

The magical part about a Mashup like this; I wouldn't ever consider using either song, in the original form, in my class… but blend them together and I joyfully hit the “Play” button. OK, it maybe that it's because it's a little naughty 🙂 But the connection to the Bee Gees makes it alright, doesn't it?

One of three missing pieces has been added to Spotify

Crossfade to your heart's content!

I love Spotify Premium. I play my class music in every class using my iPhone and a Bluetooth receiver.

But there's something wrong with everything and what I feel is wrong with Spotify is:

  • It isn't available everywhere on the planet
  • Playlists don't show an accurate total length, over one hour.
  • No crossfade option using your portable device – iPhone or Droid for gapless playback.

I just discovered that there is now a crossfade option on my iPhone 🙂

Open Spotify > Options and use the slider to set the crossfade. I've played around and found 6 secs seems to work well.

Now if we can get those other two problems fixed…

Do you find yourself searching for songs to open your rides with- the perfect tunes to help your class ease into 80-90 rpm’s and a proper warm up?  Here is a good one from a Juno Award winning Canadian singer-song writer.  It is light hearted, clips along at 86 rpm and is conducive for introducing yourself, your ride profile and anything else on your mind that needs expressing before everyone gets heavy duty into the ride of the day.  Feist’s songs have been used in commercials and movies, so her sound may be recognizable to you.  Here is Feist  and “I Feel It All”, from her 2007 album The Reminder.

And here's two interesting mixes of Feist tracks you may enjoy.

ICI/PRO member Alan Fletcher suggested the track for this week.

Hi John,
The other day I ran into this song on YouTube: Love The Way You Lie – MASHUP from cover artist Sam Tsui and I thought it was a really great song for my spin class. I normally use it as my second to last song when we are doing a fast run to the end. Students seem to like it a lot as I see many mouthing the words while spinning.

This is a nice light tune that I can easily see brightening the day of my students… thanks for sending it Alan!

Not avalible from Spotify but you can download Love The Way You Lie here for free.

Tech Tuesday – Member Questions Answered

Help with spotify

There is the option to Sync All but be careful if you have a lot of playlist. Tick each playlist you wish to sync.

Comments: Hi John-
I have scoured the entire ICI website and can't find anything to help me with the following:

1. It doesn't look like Spotify is syncing in some way with my droid2 phone. I have the app open on my phone before I open the software on my iMac. I updated a playlist on my iMac, and it didn't update the list on my phone. SO… I figured out how to download the songs directly to my phone. That led me to problem #2

2. when I add the songs to a playlist directly on my phone, it puts them at the end, and I can't find a way of moving them around (maybe this is too much for spotify)

So… I thought maybe I should delete the playlist from my phone, and if I log in to Spotify again, maybe it would sync up again, but I'm afraid of doing this and losing my playlist on my phone (since I have this playlist to play offline and it took quite a while to sync).

Is there a command/button on spotify to ask it to sync up again, and should it update anything on my phone that I updated on my iMac?

Also, is there a way of selecting only certain playlists to go to my phone, versus all of them?

Thanks so much for your help!!!!!

My response:

Interesting how I do things the opposite; I have a PC and use an iPhone – but I think everything is the same.

Yes you can select which playlists will sync to you Droid – the trick is finding where you do it 🙂

  1. Open Spotify in both your Mac and Droid – both need to be connected to the same Wireless system
  2. You should see your Droid listed in the left hand column under devices.
  3. Click on your Droid listing and you will see a list of all your playlists
  4. Tick the box for the playlists you want to sync
  5. You will still need to set each playlist to “Available off line” on your device.

I've attached a screen shot that show this.

You can reorder songs on your device by clicking the “pencil” icon and then dragging them by using the three horizontal icon on the right – but I haven't had good success with it. Better to reorder them on your Mac.

Does that help?

John-

Thanks a million!!!!!  Truly!  You have saved my sanity and allowed me to work with all the playlists I have put into spotify and onto my phone.  Thank you!!!!

If this helped you please Like it on Facebook.

Find new spinning class music

I've been doing a lot of “Shazam-ing” lately; in my car (safely), during a movie (now I don't have to wait for the credits) and just the other day at a friends office. I was walking down the hall and there was a very familiar tune playing over the Muzak system. Familiar… and yet not – something told me I knew the song, but I couldn't bring the name or artist into focus.

Does that ever happen to you?

Of course I'd left my iPhone in the car. I ran out and back just in time for Shazam to tell me who it was – Robyn doing a cover of Cobrastyle. I clicked the iTunes sample and as I listened to it, why I couldn't place it became obvious – I could understand the words 🙂

I've always enjoyed this 90 rpm tune and I have to admit I really liked the movie where I first heard it as well. OK – I'm a closet Jessica Simpson fan and she's got a line of fabulous shoes.

Here it is in Spotify

The original from the Teddybears.
One suggestion if you want to really fire up your class – this sounds best LOUD!
