You'll be quicker up Pikes Peak after a winter training indoors with power!
While Performance Enhancement Specialist Dennis Mellon and I were getting warmed up to record his Audio Class PROfile Mashup – HIIT vs. Party on the Bike, we spent a few minutes discussing his thoughts and observations on coaching with power.
Were his participants seeing any improvement after a full winter training indoors with power?
If so, how are they comparing their performance year to year?
Has Star Trac been able to improve the consistence / accuracy of the Blade Ions?
Can we depend on riders bringing their own technology (HR Monitor, iPhone App, ect…) to class for the purpose of tracking performance?
Or is it better to provide rider data/metrics tracking as a service of the studio?
During our conversation Dennis makes an interesting comment about a summer class format, that could be of interest to the cyclists and endurance athletes who abandoned you this Spring. Many training plans call for very specific HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) – which is difficult to complete on the road, but easy to do indoors. It may make sense to ask one of the local endurance coaches in your area if they would be interested in bringing their athletes indoors once a week to your studio.
You can learn more about Dennis here at his website.
If you'd like to learn more about automated rider data/performance tracking from Performance IQ with the Spinner Blade Ion or any of the other Indoor Cycles with power, please contact me and I'll connect you with the right people.
Do you have any understanding of using Earthing / Grounding to enhance recovery? How about PEMF or Thermogenics?
Many of the top endurance athletes in the world are using these technologies to speed and enhance recovery – including IRONMAN Triathlete, Endurance Coach and ICI/PRO Team member Ben Greenfield.
I hate to admit it, but these technologies were almost completely unknown to me until this interview with Ben and I'm guessing you may appreciate learning about these alternative recovery tools as well.
During the interview we discuss Ben's live health and fitness conference he has scheduled for March 8th and 9th in Spokane WA.

Georgia Green is a regular participant in Amy and my cycling classes at Life Time Fitness. I'll never forget the first day she walked in > tall, strong, with a great big smile – she looks like a fitness instructor – and came right up to me, with her hand extended; “Hi, I'm Georgia!”
Georgia and Mark set to test their gear.
What she didn't share with me, during our initial meeting, is that Georgia has committed to training and planning to spend a year riding 10,000 miles with her friend Mark and their 2 rescue dogs; Junebug and Biscuit. Amy learned that a while later, after one of her Saturday classes. Once I heard this amazing story I knew I wanted to have Georgia on the show 🙂
I caught up with Georgia while she was in Alabama testing her new touring bikes and the other specialised gear they'll need for their trip. We discuss her motivation to commit to this adventure and all the planning they've done to make this ride a reality.
ICI/PRO Member Dennis Mellon introduced us to the concept of Harmonic Mixing our playlists. A technique used by many of the top DJ's, Harmonic Mixing involves sequencing your music tracks in the same or a complimentary musical key, to avoid clashing Keys and harsh transitions. The net effect is to create a pleasing feel to the flow of your music, increase / decrease energy or craft in some emotional response.
Here's an example of 32 songs mixed in 5 minutes. This is done using the Mixed In Key technique:
I'm fascinated by this. Wanting to learn more, I did what I always do; I contacted the folks who created the software Dennis uses – Mixed In Key. Their representative, Professional DJ Andy Schneider joins me to discuss the Why's and How's of Harmonic Mixing and how you can use it to improve your classes.
During the interview, Andy pays a nice compliment to Momentum Cycling Studio Owner Victoria Smith for her class music selections!
We're a little less than a month away from the Day Light Savings time change – Sunday, November 6. I've always considered that the un-official start of the Indoor Cycling season; rolling the clock back an hour makes it easier to commit to that 5:30 am class and you're certainly not going to be riding after work… in the dark!
So October can be a great time to polish up on your presentation skills. What follows is one of my all-time favorite interviews, featuring master Educator Lawrence Biscontini. I say favorite because not only was Lawrence a joy to talk to, but the importance of delivering a well crafted class introduction really helped to improve my classes.
Give it a listen and see if you agree.
“Great actors don’t show up on set and improvise as soon as the camera starts rolling. They practice putting their own personality into the words scripted for them…. Practice delivering your opening and closing scripts and you’ll be as polished as a professional actor.” So says Lawrence Biscontini in his Scripted Starts and Flawless Finales article in the October 2012 issue of the IDEA Fitness Journal.
Lawrence describes the 8 essential points that he feels you should be including in the first few minutes of your class in this episode of the Indoor Cycle Instructor Podcast.
After recording this with Lawrence, I felt strongly that including a Scripted Start in every class is another Best Practice that will help improve your class presentation 🙂
