Silver lining (or black, or blue, or green, or….)
Based on all the great comments we're getting, it looks like many of us like to wear a bit of eye make up when we teach. Last week was all about mascara. This week we'll look at eyeliner- how to best wear it, and good liners that have staying power. I often get asked, "Should I wear eyeliner on the top or on the bottom?" My answer is: both. Having said that, care should be taken not to minimize the look of our eyes by lining the bottom completely back into the corner. (See side picture). A more natural, eye opening option, is to line the entire top of our eye, and the lower eye half -way to the middle of our iris. (See picture below). Black liner is of course the most dramatic, and least forgiving, color. Brown, bronze and gray are softer and more natural. A smudged pencil also gives a...
Cinnamon Spice For Those Things Not So Nice!
John gave me the nicest present for my birthday back in March- a 60 minute massage and mini-facial. I 'cashed in' last weekend and really enjoyed my experience. I had my mini facial first. My aesthetician was terrific and was a wealth of information! I expressed my...
The Nicest Smelling Self Tanner Yet!
My youngest daughter, Carly, is home from college for the summer. She smelled really good the other day. So good in fact, I asked her what she was wearing. Imagine my surprise when she told me it was her self tanner! Usually known for their pungent smell and sticky...
Long Lasting Polish and No UV Light Needed!
I met a dear friend for happy hour the other night and we were discussing nails. Hers looked great- they were manicured and polished with a beautiful spring coral color. Mine looked terrible- no polish and ragged cuticles. What's happened to me? I've been out of the...
A Little Something Shimmery
A little something shimmery hides a multitude of sins! I love this Pure Finish Summer Escape Bronzing Powder by Elizabeth Arden. It's subtle and lovely. This powder comes in Warm or Deep Glow, so all skin colors are complimented. A dusting with a big powder brush over...
A handy dandy little tool…
A special treat in my life is a nice manicure with gel polish. Love, love, love! But I can't always get them when I want and need them. I grow cuticles as quickly as I grow calluses. That means I need to somehow take care of my cuticle overgrowth between manicures-...
It hurts…but it's worth it!
I'm talking about Sally Hansen's Wax Strips for Body. This super easy to use press on and zip off wax system is cheapo ($6.49 at Walmart) and allows me to maintain the tiniest bit of modesty while grooming for my bike shorts and occasional swimsuit appearance! I tried...
The Multi-purpose Powder from long ago…
I found this powder way back in the cupboard of our master bathroom. I remember buying it l-o-n-g ago when the kids were little. They had terrible diaper rash and none of the standard gooey ointments were doing the trick. I called my mom, a nurse from the 50's,...
The solution was right in front of me….
And yours might be too! I've been experiencing low back and knee pain for over a year. When it got to the point when I couldn't climb stairs one-footed anymore, I finally consulted my OB/GYN at my annual appointment (it just so happens he takes John's and my classes...
Over and Out (but not totally)
"Over and out....10-4....Roger that". We use this 'radio speak' around our house a lot. Weird, I know, but it makes for clear text messages :). No wonder it's used by truckers! "Over and out, but not totally" describes what's going on with me at Clarins and my Account...
I Tried the Economical Versions…
And I think they ended up being more expensive in the end. Because, no lip liner wears like Lancome's LeLipstique. I need a liner that stays put and doesn't bleed into my vertical lip lines. When I teach, I need more than clear Chapstick, but I don't want a full...
Pack light and Carry On!
We just had a lovely long weekend in Phoenix, AZ for my niece's wedding. I have a 'thing' about paying to check luggage . So, I carried on everything I needed for 6 days-rehearsal dinner and wedding day attire, plus jackets (it gets cold there when the sun goes down),...
So Much Better Than the Dollar Store!
Just a short little post today to tell you about a great product I found for $1.00!!!! If you're like me, every once in awhile you get an unsightly pimple....zit....shaving bump (for our men) - whatever we want to call it. ELF (Eyes, Lips, Face) has a great...
Happy New Year from me to you and maybe you to you!
Usually PRO/STYLE pops up on Wednesdays, but I wanted to get this to you early so you can take advantage of the great deals out in retail land for your New Year's Eve festivities. I did a little shopping for you today, hoping that either: -You received a bit of...
Game Day…time for a new play?
Weddings, job interviews, job reviews, press interviews, photo shoots, video reviews, reunions..... Do you have a big day coming up? The kind of day you need your "A" game for.? I like to call these game days. And a good rule of thumb to follow for game days is: Don't...
Ten things I can't be without on a beach vacation (some may surprise you):
It's snowing right now in MN. Rather robust flakes in fact. It makes me more excited to leave for Jamaica next Sunday on our working vacation! No need to be jealous...you can take a working vacation too! Here's ten things I can't be without when on vacation in...
Deep cleaning time?
While deep cleaning the carpets today, (overnight guests coming for Thanksgiving and a Yorkie that's untrainable....) I got to thinking about my Clarisonic experience. The correlation being deep cleaning- not dirty carpet and naughty dogs! Clarisonic skin care systems...
Conceal well- and there's no need to carry!
Has the onset of winter brought your eye circles to the forefront? It sure seems mine are worse these days! In the 'olden days' we called it cover up. Today, the cosmetic industry affectionately refers to it as concealer. Whatever we call it, done correctly, it can...
A Winter Wonderland Needs Winterizing
Snow is predicted here in MN for later today. Oh joy! We're busy 'winterizing' our houses, cabins, cars, motorcycles, bikes, boats, water toys, lawnmowers, etc. In fact, I ran down to the office to ask John if we'd blown out the sprinkler system yet. (After 25 years...
The Eyes Have It
Dark Circles...Puffiness...Wrinkles...Loss of Firmness...Dryness... Every time I'm in store, women (and some men) ask for an eye cream that will truly addresses these issues. Through the years, I've had the opportunity to try many (many!) eye creams. Some I've...
Crying tears of…mascara?
I have instructor friends with very blonde eyelashes. So for them to go without mascara on teaching days (like I do) is not an option. Most of them don't like waterproof mascara. (Me either- it feels heavy, dries my lashes out and is virtually impossible to get off,...
It's fall- time to tighten up!
Oh joy, oh bliss, it's fall here in MN (insert sarcasm here). Time to put the self tanner away and pull out the tights. In the past, I would put on my 'cheapo' tights for the first time in the fall, and they would make 'that' sound. You know, the sound of elastic...
Window Framing
Eyebrows. They make us look younger, frame our eyes and we need them to make our facial anatomy look right. Guys- just a quick word and then you can b(r)ow out :). If you have exceedingly bushy, or wiry brows, you can easily groom them with a manicure scissors. My dad...
A bit too callused?
When dancing years (and years and years....) ago in college, we had only one efficient way to remove calluses from our feet. We would sit around the studio after practice and use a single razor blade to cut them off. Thinking about it now, I am grateful I didn't get a...
You can tan from a can-can!
Do any of you remember Sudden Tan by Coppertone? Research shows it was the cosmetic industry's first attempt at self tanner. And a failed attempt it was...orange and streaky and so obviously fake! I think I could still name a few people that used it in high school!...
The Skinny on Skin
You know how it can be challenging as Indoor Cycling Instructors to convince those in the weight room that it's important to cardio train in addition to lifting? Sometimes it's the same way for me about skin care, sunscreen and convincing people of our skin's...
You Scream, I Scream, We All Scream For Sunscreen
Okay, we may not be screaming for it, but we might be silently screaming about it because: We've heard enough about SPF to last us a lifetime. We didn't wear it, the damage is done (although we know we can stop further damage) and we just don't like the stuff. We've...
Minimal Minerals
If you are anything like me, a little bit of help to look and feel your best when heading out to teach/ coach your class is welcome. But, when it comes to make up, I'd rather err on the side of too little than too much, not only in how it feels on my skin, but also in...
Red in the Face, or Just Plain Irritated?
Do you find yourself wondering why your skin is red much of the time? Not red, like "I just worked out in Zone 4 for 60 minutes red", but rather a red that doesn't go away after you have recovered and gone on with your day. Maybe you're also wondering why your skin...
Welcome to ‘PRO Style'!
THERE ARE NO UGLY PEOPLE... JUST LAZY ONES (Chinese proverb) Hi and welcome to the very first 'PRO Style' post. I'm so glad you're here! As we start out together, I thought it might be helpful to do the 'what' and 'why' thing and then a little about me: So, 'what'...
