3 Years of IndoorCycleInstructor.com

Experts say that once a business or organization has completed it's third year, the potential for success goes up exponentially!

Well, today, August 2nd 2011, is the 3 year anniversary of the Indoor Cycle Instructor Podcast and www.indoorcycleinstructor.com

And to think that when I started, I was concerned that we would run out of ideas for new posts or Podcasts 🙂

It all began with this post which introduced my method of organizing music in iTunes based on the concept of Training Rates.  Since then we have published an enormous amount of digital content in various forms; 167 Podcast episodes, 44 Audio PROfiles, dozens of videos and over 900 individual posts / pages. They have been viewed or downloaded a crazy number of times.

How crazy? Here are some of the numbers*

  • ~ 750,000 – The number of times the “digital” Amy has told a listener; “Hi, this is Amy, the senior Group Fitness Instructor at the Indoor Cycle Instructor Podcast…”
  • ~ 300,000 – Total hours spend by Instructors listening to the Podcasts
  • ~ 33,000 – Average number of downloads we deliver each month

* It wasn't until September 2009 that I began using a service that would give me accurate data on the number of downloads we deliver each month. It's also important to understand that even though we have over 160 episodes, only the last 80 are available through iTunes.

We do have very accurate data on traffic to indoorcycleinstructor.com starting from day one. These numbers are even more crazy:

  • 170,000 unique visitors came to the site
  • The made 333,647 visits (how many were yours?)
  • 16,156 of this visits were on a mobile device
  • They viewed 923,484 pages
  • 4,074 of those page views were through a dial up modem – really?
  • They're visiting from every continent on the planet (I'm still looking hear from my visitor in the Falkland Islands)
  • ICI/PRO’s Top 100 Indoor Cycling Songs  with over 33,000 views is the absolutely most popular single page – Thanks Barbara Hoots!

I appreciate your time here with us and I'm firmly convinced that we couldn't have done this without YOU!

Here's to year #4 !

John

P.S. Please don't send gifts. If you want to do something special for me (and YOU) let's celebrate together  register for the conference  and I can meet you for real – or –  become a Monthly or Yearly ICI/PRO Member and we can celebrate virtually 🙂

Meet Karen Lanman – Keiser Master Instructor

We are very excited to have Keiser Master Instructor Karen Lanman as a presenter at the conference this year. Karen will be presenting two sessions that you can look forward to:
Powered Up:
Are you ready to power up your indoor cycling classes? By understanding how to utilize power measurements in your class, you can help your students understand how hard they should be working and when. In this class you will experience drills specifically designed to be used with power. You can then incorporate these ideas by instructing your students to use speed, resistance and intensity to power-up your next indoor cycling class.

Geared Up:
This action-packed class will utilize numerous cycle training techniques taken straight off the road and into your classroom. Ride away with a stronger understanding and how-to application of cycling elements such as time trialing, drafting, pedal stroke and more. Connect your cycling experience to the world of outdoor cycling, bringing your indoor cycling experience to a whole new level.

You can register for the conference here.

Filming Epic Planet Red Wing – Lake Pepin Tandem Ride this weekend

Epic planet indoor cycling dvd lake pepin red wing
Allen Jones from EpicPlanet.tv Indoor Cycling DVDs is in town this weekend to film Amy and me on an Epic Ride! This will be the first Epic Tandem ride and will feature us riding “The Bus” – our Trek Tandem. We will be riding with our friends Tony and Jean who are a very accomplished Tandem pair.
Our ride begins in the historic Mississippi river town of Red Wing, MN. We will be riding east across the river and then follow the river south on the Wisconsin side with great views of the river bluffs and Lake Pepin.
For you music history buffs, our route takes us through the little town of Bay City, WI which (at least by my understanding) was where the dart landed on the map, thrown by a member of Scottish Pop Band The Saxons, giving them their new name – The Bay City Rollers.

The ride ends with a particularly nasty climb up the side of the bluff to a fantastic location looking out over the river valley.
This Map shows our journey.

Another fun post from Julie Erdmann – The Day I Broke a Sweat

Spinning Heart Rate Chart
I look forward to Julie Erdmann's emails alerting me that she has a new Picture – Post up at Tri-ing to be Athletic blog. Julie is a triathlete in training and incorporates spin classes in her training. Her blog chronicles her experiences, offering us all a unique view from our student's perspective.

If you missed them, here are the other two posts Julie shared.

Was she at your class?

Training to staying ahead

You may have noticed that indoorcycleinstructor.com was getting a little slower to load and refresh. I did and it didn't make me happy 🙁

So, in my relentless pursuit to keep ICI/PRO as the ultimate independent resource for Indoor Cycling Instructors, I spent the better half of yesterday doing something to get back in shape.

My team and I completed some extensive database upgrades over the weekend and you should see much faster access to the 900+ pages of articles, Podcasts, Audio PROfiles and videos we have to offer.

If you visited here Sunday afternoon and saw anything strange, that's why.

Where in the world do you teach?

Where do you teach spinning classes?

Do you realize that there are thousands of Clubs and Studios, offering some form of Indoor Cycling,  located all-over the world?

And those facilities employ tens of thousands of Instructors, like me and you!

So I was thinking; wouldn't it be cool if there was a map that showed all of their locations… and listed the Instructors?

We've created just such a map over at Pedal-On.com and we're waiting for you to add your club or studio:)

Click here to learn more and add your Club / Studio.

FAQ's

  • I don't own a club. Why should I bother creating a listing? The listing will help students find your club and attend YOUR class, other Instructors living in & travelling to your town will also find your listing (this is a good thing) and then can contact you for a guest pass or maybe just to connect with another like minded Instructor.
  • Do I need to be the owner or manager to create a listing? No. There's no reason not to create a listing for your club or studio. Everything you need will be found on your club's website.
  • Does this cost anything? Nope.
  • Can I list more than one location? Yes. You can create a listing for all the places where you teach.
  • Do I have to share my personal information? Not if you don't want to 🙂 The listing will show your Pedal-On user name and the Contact info should be the public information for the studio.
  • What other information can I include? The listing can be as simple as just general information or full of detail like the type of cycles you ride, certifications, unique programs and class schedules. You can include anything you feel will be of value to someone looking at your listing.
  • How do I get started? Click here to see if your club / studio is listed. If it isn't, click the green button to add your club. (You do need to be a registered Pedal-On user. If you aren't you will be taken to the easy to use registration form)
  • My club is already listed, how do I add my user name? Click the coordinator listed to PM them, asking to be added.
