Where are all the young fitness Instructors?
It's a great question. I thought Stages Indoor Cycling's Master Educator Dunte Hector may have some understanding of the perception the fitness industry has among college students. After all he's only 23 and is very active at Texas Tech University.
Before we recorded his Race of Truth Audio PROfile, I asked Dunte to share his ideas and observations about the opportunities for young people in fitness in this episode of the Podcast.
If you have or know someone who's considering a fitness career – this interview may be of interest to them.
There's maybe a new App on your iPhone when you update to OS 6.0
Wasn't I just saying; if it wasn't for Podcasts, I would rarely (if ever) use iTunes?
Well I now iPhone/iPad users can access The Indoor Cycle Instructor Podcast through a new Podcast App, completely bypassing iTunes.
IMPORTANT NOTE!
This new Podcast App changes how ICI/PRO members will subscribe to the premium RSS feed (Super Secret iTunes Feed) that allows you to download Member's Only Audio PROfiles and PRO/Podcasts.
For ICI/PRO members who were already subscribing – no worries. Your settings will automatically move everything to the new Podcast App.
Any ICI/PRO members wanting to use their iPhone to download and listen to our Member's only content please visit this page for simple instructions to adding your premium feed to the new Podcast App.
Some of you may have noticed the new Podcast App – it installed automatically for me – but not everyone I've talked to – when you upgraded to OS 6.0. You do upgrade your iPhone or Android device when prompted, don't you? Sounds like another Best Practices.
I'm seeing the new Podcast App as a big improvement, actually the whole OS 6.0 update as a big improvement, because now many common tasks can be done wirelessly. In other words; YOU ARE NO LONGER A SLAVE TO CONNECTING YOUR iPHONE TO A COMPUTER WITH THE CORD! Which of course is one of the benefits to Spotify – everything is done using a wireless connection 🙂
If you turn on the free iCloud storage and enable the iCloud Backup there may not be any reason to connect your iPhone to your computer at all.
This new App completely bi-passes iTunes. Once you've added the App here's a few tips and suggestions:
In the main Settings area (where you turn on Airplane mode) scroll down to Podcasts and be sure that Use Cellular Data is off so you don't burn through your Data plan 🙁
Open the Podcast App and select a Podcast. Clicking the arrow as shown takes you to the setting screen…
… can set the subscription to update and download new episodes whenever you have wireless service.
This Podcast is was originally published on March 26, 2009, I have updated it with our new Podcast host information and I am representing it now. I hope you enjoy it, Joey
iSpinning™, the new iPhone® App, along with the SMHEART LINK™ is coming to your studio soon!

While it may seem redundant to say, most indoor bikes do not move. Please, stop and think about that for a moment. We are not talking about forward motion or distance, of course an indoor bike does not move forward. But what about the other motions that are involved in cycling.
When a rider is out of the saddle, most riders sway the bike from side to side a bit. Why does this happen? Generally, it is the mechanical reality of the situation due to applying extreme power to each pedal. Since the pedals are not on the centerline of the bike, applying a large force to the right pedal will, physically speaking, apply a rotational force that pushes the top of the bike to the right and the bottom of the bike to the left. Without this counterbalancing motion, the wheel would kick out to the side. By swaying the bike in the opposite direction, the amount of force that can be applied to the pedals is increased without crashing.
The second primary aspect of swaying the bike is that it allows the rider to engage their upper body (especially core and arms) into the movement which increases power.
Take a moment and watch some of the pros race, they only have about a 12 degree sway; less than most avid riders. This is due to their efficiency and power.
The last aspect of swaying the bike is that it allows the rider to more thoroughly align their biomechanics with the work that is being done. By tilting the bike, the rider is able to keep the leg that is driving down with a majority of the force in alignment lessoning the outward lateral stress on the joints.
With the exception of a few new bikes on the market, most indoor bikes do not provide movement side-to-side, and none of them replicate the true motion of an outdoor bicycle. Because of this limitation, instructors must emphasize relaxation when riding and allow gentle upper-body movement. Attempting to maintain a still upper body can place the spine and surrounding muscles at risk from the forces being generated by the legs.
Do you have any understanding of using Earthing / Grounding to enhance recovery? How about PEMF or Thermogenics?
Many of the top endurance athletes in the world are using these technologies to speed and enhance recovery – including IRONMAN Triathlete, Endurance Coach and ICI/PRO Team member Ben Greenfield.
I hate to admit it, but these technologies were almost completely unknown to me until this interview with Ben and I'm guessing you may appreciate learning about these alternative recovery tools as well.
