I never imagined I would love a song that started out with a piano and Conn electronic organ, but I do. The instrumental layers and vocal harmonies of this AMERICAN (finally!) soul/indie pop band from LA are so interesting. I could suggest most of the songs off the CD, Pickin Up the Pieces by Fitz and the Tantrums, but I picked out “Tighter” for today”™s Friday Favorite. It is a 60 rpm, 4:56 climb that I use as my last profile climb before heading into our final flat and recovery. The song builds nicely and at 3:05 breaks open with beautiful vocals and supporting strings for a great final push.
I hope you like it as much as I do. Here is Fitz and the Tantrums and “Tighter”:

I also need to say Happy Birthday to John's Grandfather; John Macgowan Sr. who would have been 100 today. Yes, he was born on 11/11/1911 🙂

Amy,
I love that when you talk about how the song builds you refer to time into the track, not the time left running on the track. That makes it so much easier to find it for our cues.
Never did understand the need to count down instead of up.
Speaking of great finishing climb tunes have your ‘Friday Favorites’ fans check out EROS by Ludovico Einaudi. the first seven minute of the this classical piano masterpiece slowly builds until it becomes a powerful, motivating almost desparate driving force your riders can follow to the end.
I tell them (and keep my word) that I will do very little cueing. It is not needed. Let the music take you there. I do give them time remaining.
The track itself is 10:38 but the climactic finish happens at 6:50. At that point there is applause (it was recorded live) and I tell the class to climb until you hear people cheering for you. We all like that!
Thank Chuck! I’m glad that what makes sense to me makes sense to you! I’m sure it has to do with the fact that our stereo system at the club counts ‘into’ the track and that is what I watch.
I will check out EROS now. I like songs that I don’t have to cue much to.
