Great info and perfect timing. I was getting ready to teach class centered around breathing to relax because I’m hoping to teach the Stage 5 profile sometime soon and relaxation is key to cadence skills. This gave me some good material. I put a lot of songs about breathing in my profile and will see how it turns out this Sunday.
Marsha, let us know how it goes. Are you going to use “breathe” by Telepopmusik for a cooldown? I love this song! If you don’t have it, email me!
It was a fun class and the music helped them remember to breathe and relax, especially on the hard efforts. We’ve been working quite a bit lately on standing surges at cadence since most Spinning students tend to go on cruise control as soon as they stand. Since I do a lot of 80rpm resistance building climbs, it’s definitely a challenge for them.
I used songs from a number of genres mixed with some pure instrumentals. I’ve been using a lot of UltraMax classical mixes lately. I’m a classical music fan and this is a chance to use some of the music I really love.
We cooled down with K D Lang’s magnificent cover of The Air That I Breathe. Also used Breathe by Blue Stone, The Police classic, Every Breath You Take, a fun song I found called No Air, by Jordin Sparks. Even did a recovery in the middle of the workout to Breathless, by Taylor Swift, although her stuff usually makes me cringe.
I find that the most useful trick in teaching breath consciousness is to ask students to breathe deeply, then slightly extend the exhale. Not enough to make you gasp, just extend comfortably. This automatically slows the breathing without a lot of effort. Really works when the going gets hard.
