Cycling Fusion is conducting a search for America's Top 10 Indoor Cyclists and ICI/PRO member Doug Rusho has this video up on YouTube.
Congratulations Doug! I realize that it take's a special confidence to "put yourself out there" and be judged by your peers!
You can find more entry videos here. Info on the Conference is here.

Pay attention to how Doug describes the ride to his students during the warm-up. They know exactly what they’re in for. He carefully describes the intensity, what it will feel like, and gives them options.
This is a great skill to have as an instructor.
Is it me or are others not too impressed by what has been submitted so far. Granted I have not been brave enough to submit a video but after I have seen POPCORN JUMPS (!), cadences of over 130 (!), leaning on the handlebars (without aero bars) (!)Augghh! These instructors haven’t read Jennifer’s book or I’m still in the minority of trying to teach according to Jennifer’s (and other credible programs) principles. Yes, some videos were fairly decent but I’m shocked to see that these are ICI followers! Help… is it me? Thanks!
Let me clarify my posting above… I shouldn’t assume that the video postings are from ICI followers! 🙂
Yes, I don’t think some of them are. Doug is, and I think his is great – nothing CI there! But I see what you mean…lots of very fast cadence.
Maybe we should include a copy of Keep it Real for all who submit a video!
I agree and I give everyone credit for having the courage to post their video on youtube. I think Doug’s video is really good. I like the way he has adapted an outside ride to inside, clearly explained how long the climbs are (and recovery) so students know what to expect. I think his cues, visualization and the mantra he has his students repeat are good and I think he’s motivational without being in your face. Good job Doug!
I couldn’t figure out why in the last few days I was getting comments on my you tube video all of a sudden. Now I see, it has been posted here at ICI/pro!
It is really hard to watch and listen to yourself on video. I finished this and was like “yikes is that really me?” However, you will learn a ton about your presentation and nonverbal skills, along with posture, form etc. I encourage everyone to enter this contest( few days left I think) just for the learning experience. Thanks for the feedback!
Doug, I know the feeling. I have to swallow hard when I see myself on video! But it is an incredible learning experience, a type of biofeedback of your presence on the bike. I too encourage EVERYONE to send in a video. If you’re reading this, if you’re an ICI/PRO member or even just a newsletter subscriber, you all know what to do to catch the attention of the judges:
– Keep it Real (is it effective training both indoors and outdoors?)
– Have some sort of objective
– Let your class know what you’re going to do, how long and how they’re going to feel when they do it
– Use positive coaching and cueing (and use good cueing, not just Go go go)
– Perhaps bring some mental motivation or mind-body awareness and inspiration into it
In short, everything we teach here at ICI, or that Cycling Fusion espouses, or that Stage5 Cycling teaches or that qualifies as really good coaching and inspiration (that adheres to proper cycling training principles)…
Do this and you have an excellent chance of being chosen!
I KNOW you all can do this. Really! Now get going and get your video in. Borrow a video if you have to.
Great job,
i love your motivational talk to the members and lights and disco ball and music add great touch to the class.
Really nice
I enjoyed the videos that were submitted for this year’s Top 10 Cycling Contest.
It’s wonderful to see some of our IDC classes
in action. Kudos to all of you who recorded your class-it definitely shows confidence in your abilities – I think that it’s great seeing people enjoying this mode of exercise (both Participants/Members AND Instructors).
This also shows a wide variety of styles of instructors/instruction and each class has its own personality, too. Yes, we ICIs should all videotape a class at least once in our lifetime (even if it’s just for our own observation) and maybe have a few giggles or two…To all of you ICIs out there – Keep it Safe, Fun and Keep them Coming Back!!
Sam Patel’s video:
I really like the remixed version of Muse’s
“Resistance”. Checked iTunes for this version and couldn’t find it (I think it’s about 6-7minutes in length). Anybody know where I can find this one? Thanks!!!
Great class Doug!!!
I love the way you narrate the ride, complete with details! I know I just got a glimpse of the full 90 minutes, but I felt like I was there.
Thanks for sharing!
PS: jealous of the disco ball…must find a way to get it in my club!!
Hey Doug! Let me know if you’re in need of a job! Look, no push-ups! Ugh.
Loved this video – I could probably watch all 90 mins of it! Doug, if you are on Pedal-On, I’d love to see your playlist and profile!
Hey there! Is it possible to extend the deadline for this contest maybe a week? I decided to throw my hat into the ring only so the world can see what a class of 60 at 5:30 am looks like sweating, cheering, exuberant and energized. If you can give me a few more days I’ll upload a video. Thanks!!!
Anything you want my dear 🙂 I make a personal request on your behalf.
