Today marks my entrance to the ranks of the self-employed. I haven't talked about it much, but like many Indoor Cycling Instructors I had a day job. Mine for the past 20+ years was managing a sales territory, for a distributor of underground construction equipment, as a commissioned sales rep. With the economy showing no real signs of recovering and businesses still not having the confidence to invest in capital equipment, the owner of the company and I decided to part ways (although there wasn't much to part from).
Amy and I want to thank all our supporting ICI/PRO members for helping us soften the transition to working for myself 🙂
OK. NPR does this... so why can't I?

Yea, John. There’s nothing like the independence. But I will tell you that you now work for the meanest boss in the world who never gives you time off, etc, etc, etc. Your creative entrepreneurship will take you anywhere. Bon voyage!
My husband had a forced career change several years ago. Thirty years in the same profession wasn’t something easy to walk away from. The anxiety level of changing was extremely high but what a reward! He wished he had changed careers earlier. I think the toughest part was learning how to manage his time. Now, we are able to have time for ourselves and the things we enjoy! It is now your time! Enjoy the ride!!!
Hey John I totally relate to whatyou are going through. I wrote a poem about it, which I have included here. Good luck!
fear is fire’s cousin;
a servant good,
a master cruel.
fear is fire’s cousin;
a master only,
given fuel.
fear is fire’s cousin;
a servant good,
a master cruel.
fear is fire’s cousin;
a servant only,
given rule.
fear is fire’s cousin;
an opportunity,
for renewal.
