Here is the continuation of my interview with Master Instructor Tom Scotto where we discuss if the 2 Threshold / 3 Zone system could have application in a power based class.
During our conversation we discuss the idea of recruiting a number of our very intelligent Instructors to experiment with using a 2 Threshold / 3 Zone system to find a student's low power threshold and use it to create a their training zones. Essentially crowd-sourcing the development of a new method of helping everyone discover a specific metabolic marker that's unique to each student and that could be found as part of every class.

I think this is more “user friendly”. I am not a techy. I like it…let’s do it. It is easy to interpret and teach.
I understand what you are getting at with the Heart Rate Training. Here is what I think about ‘spinners’ and indoor cycling classes:
The majority of folks who take indoor cycling classes expect high intensity (and this includes both good and mediocre instruction: workouts with a purpose v and ?? workouts or haphazard ‘aerobics on a bike’). Where I work the frequency of folks using a heart rate monitor is less than 30%. (John, interesting comment from your NLeaf Metabolic tester!)
We as instructors understand the various T Zones and how each
relates to the intensity or perceived exertion. If we already know how to use Power/Watts numbers to gain fitness (field tests) we can certainly do this for body composition. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds in the world of indoor cycling. How about 90minute classes specifically for this? During the summer I always entice folks to try riding outside if they don’t already (esp since I live in California~)… This is a great way to work on the lower TZones. Most people ride for at least 2 hours on a beautiful day outside…this would be a great place to start.
ICI/PRO, you guys are the best.
